Description: The best communicators understand that every conversation involves one of three dimensions: practical (What’s this really about?), emotional (How do we feel?), and social (Who are we?). Without identifying the type of conversation, meaningful connection is difficult. Good communicators recognize the importance of identifying and aligning with each type of conversation. They excel at perceiving the complex emotions, subtle negotiations, and deeply held beliefs that influence our speech and listening habits. Our experiences, values, emotional states, and self-perceptions shape every discussion, whether it is about handling the mundane such as family chores or how to talk with clients and colleagues.
